Computing
Computing at Leasowe Primary School
Our Vision
At Leasowe Primary School, we aim to prepare our children for a rapidly changing world where technology plays an increasingly central role. Computing is an essential life skill, and we want every child to become a confident, responsible and creative user of technology.
We believe children should be creators, not just consumers. Our curriculum—covering computer science, information technology and digital literacy—gives pupils the knowledge and skills they need to understand how technology works and how it can be used to solve problems, communicate ideas and express creativity.
Technology is everywhere, and we are committed to teaching children how to use it positively, safely and responsibly.
What Computing Looks Like at Leasowe
Across the school, children have opportunities to:
· Use a range of digital devices and software
· Develop computational thinking and problem‑solving skills
· Learn how digital systems work
· Create digital content such as animations, presentations and media
· Use technology to research, communicate and collaborate
· Understand how to stay safe online
Our curriculum is designed to be engaging, relevant and reflective of pupils’ lives, preparing them for a future where technology surrounds them.
Computing in the Early Years (EYFS)
Although the technology strand is no longer part of the EYFS curriculum, we recognise the importance of early computing experiences. In the Early Years, computing is introduced through play‑based, hands‑on activities that build:
· Logical thinking
· Early problem‑solving
· Fine motor skills
· Listening and questioning
· An understanding of how technology is used in the world
Computing is woven throughout the EYFS curriculum. Children may:
· Take photographs linked to topic work
· Use digital books and navigation tools
· Explore paint and drawing programs
· Use programmable robots to develop directional language
We follow a structured set of EYFS computing skills developed with Hi‑Impact, ensuring children are well prepared for Computing in Key Stage 1.
Our Partnership with Hi‑Impact
Leasowe Primary School works closely with Hi‑Impact, a specialist computing and technology provider. This partnership ensures our curriculum is current, progressive and exciting.
Through Hi‑Impact, pupils benefit from:
· High‑quality workshops
· Access to the latest technology, including VR headsets and programmable robots
· Opportunities to develop teamwork, strategic thinking and problem‑solving
· Specialist expertise that enriches teaching and learning
This collaboration helps us deliver a broad and ambitious computing curriculum that reflects the fast‑moving digital world.
Curriculum Implementation
We follow the National Curriculum 2014 for Computing and use the Hi‑Impact scheme to ensure clear, consistent progression from EYFS to Year 6.
Our curriculum ensures that pupils:
· Build secure knowledge of how computers, digital systems and networks work
· Learn to program, debug and problem‑solve using age‑appropriate tools and languages
· Develop digital literacy, enabling them to create, communicate and express themselves confidently through technology
· Receive regular, comprehensive teaching in online safety, helping them to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly
How We Organise Learning
· Learning is recorded in floor books, showing progression and celebrating achievements.
· Key vocabulary is shared with families through termly curriculum letters.
· A detailed curriculum map ensures knowledge and skills build logically over time.
· Concepts are revisited regularly to support long‑term understanding.
