Intent

At Leasowe Primary School we believe personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is a vital and important part of our children’s education. The staff work collaboratively and act as role models to help our children develop into confident, happy, successful and resilient young people. We work hard to ensure our curriculum is accessible to all and therefore maximise the outcomes for all our children. We provide our children with a plethora of opportunities to learn about rights and responsibilities and learning the importance of living in a diverse society. We believe PSHE plays an important role in promoting Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) Education, and British Values is incorporated through our PSHE lessons. We want to provide a safe space for the children to learn PSHE, providing them with the ability to make safe and informed choices, taking responsibility for their actions, respecting and valuing difference and being the best that they can be. Children will learn to show acceptance of others regardless of their background, religion, race, gender or sexuality. In an ever–changing world, it is important that our children are aware, to an appropriate level, of different factors which will affect their world and that they learn how to deal with these so that they have good mental health and wellbeing. Our Relationships and Sex Education enables our children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives.

Implementation

At Leasowe Primary School we follow the Primary PSHE scheme of work Coram Life Education SCARF Programme of Study. SCARF, standing for Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship is a whole school approach that provides a scheme of learning from the Early Years Foundation Stage through to, and including, Year 6. It is mapped to the PSHE Association programmes of study. It is centred on a values based, ‘Growth Mindset’ approach and is divided into six half termly units. The units are tailored to each year group under the following themes:

  • Me and my Relationships

  • Valuing Difference

  • Keeping Myself Safe

  • Rights and Responsibilities

  • Being my Best

  • Growing and Changing

The units are taught through a spiral curriculum, being explored in greater depth and resources being tailored to each age group. There is a proven link between pupils health and well-being and their academic progress and we believe PSHE is the foundation to all of our learning therefore we ensure we teach it weekly but we will also have stand alone sessions when necessary if any issues have arisen. In addition, special events, key campaigns and themed days/weeks provide opportunities for children to explore topical issues. We record our PSHE lessons in a class floor book and our assessments are based on book looks, lesson observations and pre and post assessments for each new unit.

Impact

Our curriculum ensures that all our children become engaged, active and responsible citizens who recognise and value their contribution in a diverse society. We teach our children the correct terminology for their body parts from as early as F2 to help with self esteem and body confidence as we want our children to leave our school feeling confident, self-assured and ready for their next chapter. Successful teaching of PSHE will raise aspirations for our disadvantaged and vulnerable children, empowering them with skills to overcome barriers they may face.
